SOS OHS Summary for Alberta
The SOS Oxygen & OHS Program includes first aid and safety training for staff that is aimed at creating a safer workplace environment. Knowledge of how to respond to workplace medical emergencies makes people work safer. The more knowledge your staff has the safer your workplace will be. All training can be done at your location around your schedule and certification courses are taught by certified Canadian Red Cross Instructors.

Emergency Response Training & O2 Certification
This one-hour seminar, is available annually, at no charge, for an unlimited number of your staff. Aimed at heightening awareness about medical emergencies in the workplace so that your staff can recognize and respond accordingly. Designed to provide participants with the general knowledge and skills to correctly identify when it is necessary to administer supplemental oxygen. Participants will learn how to properly and safely handle and turn on and utilize the SOS fully-automatic oxygen unit in emergencies. This seminar is also available in a digital version and Zoom.
CPR Heart-Start Course
Courses on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) provide the skills needed to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies and choking for adults, children, and babies depending on the level of CPR chosen. Courses meet legislation requirements for provincial/ territorial worker safety and insurance boards, and include the latest CPR guidelines and training in the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Minimum 8 people required for on-site classes.

Joint OHS Committee Member Training
This one-day course is for all members of the safety committee and meets Alberta’s mandatory training requirements for new members as well as an opportunity for existing members looking to refresh or upgrade safety skills, and for organizations that are establishing their first safety committee or are looking to make their existing committee more effective. Minimum 6 people required, available via ZOOM.
Mental Health Awareness Introduction
Designed as a lunch and learn (2hr) introduction. Mental Health First Aid takes the fear and hesitation out of starting conversations about mental health and substance use problems by improving understanding and providing an action plan that teaches people to safely and responsibly identify and address a potential mental illness or substance use disorder. Available via ZOOM only.
Conflict Solutions Seminars

The following sessions are available via ZOOM and can be tailored for 1 or 2 hours each.
These sessions are led by an expert trainer and facilitator in constructive conflict management.
DEALING WITH DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS:
Class attendees will engage in discussion relating to how individual perceptions, assumptions and mindset affect thoughts, behaviours, and attitudes and ultimately the outcome of personal interactions. The module will include suggestions related to the need for professionalism, and strategies for managing our own anger during difficult interactions and strategies. This session also offers a specific strategy to defuse and de-escalate an angry or heightened person.
SUICIDE RECOGNITION & INTERVENTION:
Class attendees will explore ways to recognize the signs and indicators that a person may be moving down the path toward suicidal behaviour. In addition, this session will provide strategies for structuring a conversation with a potentially suicidal person. Participants will also be exposed to the concept of lethality assessment and ways to engage the potentially suicidal person in a “safety plan” to ensure they do not move forward with their suicidal plan.
ENHANCING EMPLOYEE SAFETY THROUGH SITUATIONAL AWARENESS:
This module is designed to raise the employee’s situational awareness to ensure that people have a sense of what is happening around them. Five levels of awareness will be incorporated into the presentation. Class attendees will look at the characteristics of a high risk violent person, behaviours that may indicate possible escalation, safety considerations for business and if violence occurs, what to do.
